Catoctin Creek Roundstone Rye

Last weekend I took a trip out to Purcellville, Virginia to visit the Catoctin Creek distillery with some friends. The tasting room was all kinds of fun, and one of the great things about it was that they distill more than just rye. They also have brandy, gin, moonshine, and limited release expressions of each. So when you go to the tasting room you can try a bunch of different flight variations including cocktails and a pairing with truffles. There is literally something there for everyone.

While there I tried all their ryes–I enjoyed both of them, but I preferred the 92 proof expression–except the limited release cask proof, which has been finished in maple syrup barrels. So what’s one to do but buy one of the few remaining bottles to try out. It’s been a long week but I waited diligently and now it’s time to crack the bottle open.

Catoctin Creek Rye – Cask Proof Finished in maple syrup barrels

Batch #B16E6; 57.3%

100% rye and aged less than four years

Color: Burnt amber

Nose: The molasses is strong with this one. Lots and lots of molasses. Molasses, caramel, maple syrup, oak, pepper, and wet grass.

Taste:  Nice slow deep burn on top and front of tongue: pepper, oak, grass, cloves, tobacco, hints of molasses

Finish: After sitting on the front of your tongue the burn begins to spread towards the side and back of your tongue and palate leaving a warm buzzing glow in your mouth along with hints of pepper, smoke, caramel, and char.

Verdict: B

This rye is not for the faint of heart. It is a full-bodied, stout rye that is best enjoyed neat or with a touch of water. I added about 10 drops to the last half and it tamped down the temperature just a bit. This is whiskey especially good to warm you up on those long, cold winter nights.

If you are ever in the area and get the chance go visit them at Catoctin Creek. You won’t be disappointed. Becky and Scott are great and all the employees were fantastic. We had a great time hanging out and chatting with everyone there plus the tour is fun. When you finish trying out their spirits head across the street to Market Burger to enjoy one of the best burgers you’ve ever had!
